Event Description: Our international research project, “Pursuing Public Health in the Preindustrial World”, looks at public health practices across Europe, South Asia, and the Middle East between 1100-1800 CE. Our research breaks down common assumptions that public health is a new phenomenon and shows that societies around the world practiced population health in sophisticated ways, albeit through different concepts of health and disease. Specifically, our new project looks at mobile groups of people – courts, pilgrims, and miners – to explore how public health was enforced and practiced in non-urban areas. For Global Public Health Week, we will repost publications by our research team, and new publications by other medical historians, to highlight the history of public health across the world. This will raise awareness of the history and importance of global public health. By sharing our site, GPHW can assist us in reaching a wider audience to bring awareness to the history of public health.
