Theme: Preparing Public Health Professionals & Associations for the New Challenges
Date and Time: 03 April 2023 | 17:00 – 18:00 (CEST)
Event Description: In reflecting on the preparation of the next generation of stakeholders engaging in public health work, task-sharing, and the training of non-specialist persons in different areas in the field, is crucial in building capacity to face challenges to come. In this process, trust in public health data is of paramount importance, yet there is considerable variability in the training and preparation of those involved in data collection. Individuals with limited research training, like students or volunteers, often play a central role in collecting data and, to date, no systematic means of evaluating data-collector or researcher competencies exists.
Researchers at the Trauma and Global Mental Health Lab at The New School in New York City, in collaboration with the Center for Global Mental Health Equity at George Washington University, developed the Assessment of Key Interviewing Factors for Research Assistants (AKIRA). The AKIRA is an 8-item competency-based assessment tool for individuals conducting data-collection interviews with the population. It provides a framework for the training and evaluation of individuals collecting data in various research, participant screening, or program monitoring settings. It focuses on the enhancement of best practices, cross-cultural and trauma-informed communication skills, fidelity, and on the identification of harmful behaviors and areas of improvement.
This webinar will discuss the development, pilot implementation and future applications of the AKIRA, as a competency-based assessment tool to improve quality of data collection in diverse public health settings, with a particular focus on global mental health.
