Date and Time: 03 April 2023 | 19:00 – 21:00 (CEST)

Theme: Preparing Public Health Professionals & Associations for the New Challenges

Date and Time: 03 April 2023 | 19:00 – 20:00 (CEST)

Event Description: Global public health is facing an unprecedented juncture of challenges: the climate crisis, looming pandemic threats, a worrying surge in antimicrobial resistance, the rapid spread of digital technologies in health, wars and the enormous widening of inequities both within and between countries. While already having a considerable impact worldwide, these issues will deeply affect the life of future generations, and the work of future health professionals. However, the engagement of young professionals in processes of global governance that will impact their lives and work remains sparse.

According to a recent report by OECD participation of youth in the policy cycle is limited: in 2019, staff aged 18-34 represented only 26% of the workforce in state institutions devoted to youth affairs. In public health specifically, many barriers still exist in the integration of young professionals in international organisations and the public health workforce. Recent research in this field has illustrated how chances to gain experience in public health before applying for full-time jobs are limited and often imply unrealistic expectations in terms of previous work experience; that the engagement policies of organisations suffer from a lack of transparency and are often hierarchical and top-down; and that mentorship programs are frequently absent or underdeveloped. These issues of inaccessibility, tokenism and lack of mentorship may result in limiting young professionals’ contributions to global governance to youth-led organisations.

During this workshop, with the help of international young speakers, we will discuss the following questions: What is the current state of affairs regarding engagement of young professionals in global governance? Which steps forward are needed to foster young professionals’ participation in global governance processes?

Event Description: Thought experiments are mental exercises that allow individuals or groups to test hypotheses or ideas without conducting actual experiments. In 2022, a group of members of the Public Health Leadership Coalition, a body assembled by the World Federation of Public Health Association, built a thought experiment to identify the one resource that could have changed the course of the COVID-19 pandemic for the better. They concluded that a species-wide, representative, accountable, and empowered governance system was missing. Thus, they proposed the addition of a Planetary Health Protection Council (PHPC) that would convene leaders from various sectors to develop reliable measures to combat pandemics and other existential threats. The PHPC would need to be perceived as trustworthy by the public and complemented by a platform to facilitate equitable participation by representative samples of the world’s population, and supported by a system of tools for community engagement.

The proposed governance system will be the focus of this workshop, where participants will explore the feasibility of this new planetary governance system and the contributions of thought experiments as tools for confronting difficult ethical issues or policy decisions. The key questions to be addressed include: What structure and working mechanisms would constitute the new system of governance? How could public health leaders and the public health community at large become more effective at engaging the population they serve, as well as leaders of the government, corporate, academic and civil society sectors? What contributions could thought experiments play as tools for public health leaders to confront difficult questions?

The insights from this activity will be used to create a revised version of the thought experiment, which will then be the driver of a workshop during the 2023 World Congress in Rome, and which will enrich the development of the strategic plan of the World Federation.

Date and Time: 03 – 05 April 2023 | 18:00 – 19:00 (CEST)

Event Description: Public health stakeholders in South Africa, including the South African government, academics and subject experts, people living with HIV (PLHIV), people with lived experience of mental health conditions, and representatives from international agencies met in September 2022 and identified a need to build awareness of moral injury as a concept among HCWs and management, as part of a strategy to tackle the psychological distress facing many HCWs in the workplace. The whole area of mental health is a new challenge that needs to be faced by Public Health Professionals and Associations, not only in South Africa, but globally as well. This webinar will seek to unpack the concept of moral injury, including how inadequate resources, policies that conflict with morals and values, cultural differences, and corruption in the health system drive the experience of moral injury in HCWs in South Africa. It will build on the report of the September 2022 round table meeting, in which panellists suggested that mental health champions, peer support structures (e.g., WhatsApp groups), campaigns, and employee assistance programs (EAPs) are potential mechanisms to build mental health resilience in HCWs. The target audience would be HCWs, management, professional associations, industry professionals and government officials. Three weeks after this Global Public Health Week, on 24-25 April, we will be hosting a major two-day in person Mental Health Conference in Johannesburg. This webinar would serve as an important opportunity to focus on an important area of mental health in the public sector in the lead-up to the conference.

Date and Time: 03 April 2023 | 17:00 – 18:00 (CEST)

Event Description: In reflecting on the preparation of the next generation of stakeholders engaging in public health work, task-sharing, and the training of non-specialist persons in different areas in the field, is crucial in building capacity to face challenges to come. In this process, trust in public health data is of paramount importance, yet there is considerable variability in the training and preparation of those involved in data collection. Individuals with limited research training, like students or volunteers, often play a central role in collecting data and, to date, no systematic means of evaluating data-collector or researcher competencies exists.

Researchers at the Trauma and Global Mental Health Lab at The New School in New York City, in collaboration with the Center for Global Mental Health Equity at George Washington University, developed the Assessment of Key Interviewing Factors for Research Assistants (AKIRA). The AKIRA is an 8-item competency-based assessment tool for individuals conducting data-collection interviews with the population. It provides a framework for the training and evaluation of individuals collecting data in various research, participant screening, or program monitoring settings. It focuses on the enhancement of best practices, cross-cultural and trauma-informed communication skills, fidelity, and on the identification of harmful behaviors and areas of improvement.

This webinar will discuss the development, pilot implementation and future applications of the AKIRA, as a competency-based assessment tool to improve quality of data collection in diverse public health settings, with a particular focus on global mental health.
