Event Description: “Eat well, Smile better” is an innovation and social entrepreneur initiative provided by the Portuguese Dental Council alongside with the Portuguese Council of Nutrition. It aims at fighting health inequalities which are a growing concern. A five months cross-sectional study was carried out among students between 6 and 11 years in 109 schools in a Portuguese low-density area. An inquiry applied to assign the children’s risk of developing cavities, according to the Caries Management by Risk Assessment criteria (CAMBRA®). Exploration was done by two qualified dentists in a mobile clinic properly equipped. The nutritional status was assessed by a nutritionist, using the anthropometric measures height and weight employing a stadiometer and a scale SECA®. The classification of nutritional status was based in the WHO percentiles of body mass index for age and sex. A literacy inquiry was done to the students to understand their knowledge about oral habits and nutrition. In total, 2395 scholars were included. The dental cavities prevalence was 51% and 39,2% of the students were overweight. Regarding literacy, 76,5% of the scholars believe that they should do a water mouth rinse after brushing and 84,8% don’t know that chicken is a source of protein. This study raises concerns about oral health, nutritional status and literacy. Preventive programs may offer a new approach to these problems.

In the Thar Desert of India, the same is visible in the forms of malnutrition and in high prevalence of both communicable and non communicable diseases. Women, children and elderly are worst affected. GRAVIS runs a holistic public health programme to improve health conditions by mitigating droughts and climate change. The seminar will discuss the aspects of drought mitigation and climate change adaptation focused on improving community health.

Event Description: The Municipality of Lisbon (CML) has around 10,000 workers. Being a large and stable population, part of the biggest city in Portugal, it is good setting for the development of health promotion activities for capacity building of the population aiming at empowering our communities with health literacy. The Department of Health, Hygiene and Safety (DSHS) has an extensive team of Occupational Safety technicians and occupational physicians, nurses, nutritionists, cardiopneumologists, and occupational psychologists. This department collaborates closely with Lisbon Universities to further develop research on the wellbeing of their employees and subsequently of the population of the municipality.

To celebrate the Global Public Health Week, the DSHS and NOVA Medical School will together enhance and advocate for Health as a Human Right and for Capacity Building for Healthier cities. To do so, we will organize a seminar/webinar, where we will invite all the employees to attend in person or online and we will have 5 short presentations, like Ted Talks. Three of these presentations will be from DSHS and 2 from the university professors, where the topics covered are:

  • Health at the workplace;
  • Health indicators at Lisbon Municipality;
  • Health literacy;
  • Active breaks during the working day;
  • Smart Cities.

This initiative aligned with your initiative from WFPHA will help the workers population to understand how important it is to care for their own health, aiming to recall the population’s attention for their overall health and wellbeing. The Questions and Answers session following the short talk presentations will be in an informal way to promote the populations interaction.
