Theme: Rethinking Public Health Paradigms

Date and Time: 8th April 2024 | 20:00-21:30 (AEST)

Event Description: In late 2023 the Indigenous Working Group of the World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA) hosted a webinar to discuss the importance of decolonisation to Public Health. The high attendance of this webinar demonstrated the keen global interest in this space. During the Webinar a draft definition of decolonising public health for the World Federation of Public Health Associations was discussed and further refined.

At the start of World Public Health Week for 2024 this webinar compliments this conversation and begins to ask the question, beyond definitions how can Public Health researchers, academics, and professionals deepen their understanding of decolonisation and practically and successfully apply it to their work? And what role does decolonisation play in supporting the profession to critically rethink key paradigms and prepare for the future?

This webinar will be co-facilitated by an Australian First Nations person and a non-Indigenous person of color. The panel will consist of First Nations advocates, researchers, and academics from across the globe. Participants will have opportunities to contribute to the conversation via polls and asking questions of panelists.

Theme: Putting Mental Wellbeing on the Health Agenda

Date and Time: 10th April 2024 | 11:00 am-12:05 pm (GMT+3)

Event Description: Mental Health is a global public health issue that negatively affects a large number of people worldwide. Such problems surpass all geographical boundaries and impact people of all ages, genders, socioeconomic backgrounds, and cultures.

Addressing mental health is crucial because it influences various aspects of human life, including physical health, productivity, relationships, and overall well-being. Moreover, neglecting mental health can lead to significant economic burdens, strain on healthcare systems, increased rates of disability, and reduced quality of life for millions of individuals globally. By prioritizing mental health on the global health agenda, we can promote resilience, foster inclusive societies, reduce stigma, and ensure equitable access to mental health services and support for all individuals, thereby contributing to the advancement of global health and sustainable development goals. However, this event aims to discuss the implications of different mental health issues that face different populations around the world, the current methods that are used to solve the issue, and recommendations about possible solutions that will assist in reducing the impact of mental health.

There are a large number of benefits of organizing this event, such as

(i) raising awareness about global mental health issues

(ii) there will be a possibility for future collaborations that may positively influence mental health

(iii) policymakers and decision-makers may benefit from such recommendations

(iv) the event will amplify the voices of public health advocates of mental health

(v) sharing stories and experiences about mental health will reduce stigma that surrounds mental health

(vi) significant networking opportunity. Many members of the WFPHA in the Middle East region were invited to participate in the event.
