The World Health Assembly Special Session (WHASS) which took place in December 2021 established an Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) to draft and negotiate a WHO convention, agreement or other international instrument on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response.

In the decision establishing the INB, the WHA also requested the WHO Director-General to hold public hearings to inform its deliberations.

The first round of hearings held in April 2022. WFPHA provided a joint statement on substantive elements of a new international instrument on pandemic preparedness and response.

The closing ceremony of Global Public Health Week 2022 (GPHW) will celebrate the importance of global public health and recognize the efforts of professionals around the world in preventing disease, protecting communities, and promoting health and well-being.

Public health is a policy choice embedded in sound scientific knowledge. At the closing ceremony which will be held on April 8, 2022 at 13:00 (CEST), leaders from WFPHA’s Public Health Leadership Coalition will discuss the place of science and policy in public health and how we must act now.

Global public health leaders, including Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), and Rt. Hon. Helen Clark, Former Prime Minister of New Zealand and Former Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), officially opened the first edition of Global Public Health Week (GPHW) on April 4, 2022 during a dedicated ceremony. The ceremony was followed by the event “Health and Social Wellbeing in a Conflict Environment” co-organized by the WFPHA and the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW).
