Theme: Promoting a Sustainable Life for Thriving Communities

Date and Time: 12th April 2024 | 13:00-14:30 (GMT)

Event Description: Conflicts are inevitable in any work environment, especially in the health sector. Failure to address conflicts between healthcare professionals impedes the progress of health public health and hinders the delivery of essential health services. A dysfunctional healthcare professional brings an insidious cost to any health organization, making the understanding of the basics of medical ethics and being capacitated in conflict management skills essential to every healthcare worker.

Since IFMSA is a hub for medical students who are interested in public and global health, capacitating the members on understanding the dimensions of conflict dynamics in public health, conflict management skills, medical ethics, and health equity is a priority.

By the end of this session, participants are expected to achieve the following objectives:

  • Understand the core causes of conflict within public health;
  • Understand cultural sensitivity and competence;
  • Develop an understanding of medical ethics and its foundational principles;
  • Explore the ethical dimensions of conflict resolution;
  • Recognize the AAAQ framework;
  • Be equipped with efficient conflict-resolution techniques

This session will be based on a peer education approach, using different interactive methodologies, including presentations, case studies, group discussions, and debates.

Theme: Enhancing and Democratizing Governance in Global Health

Date and Time: 12th April 2024 | 12:00-13:30 (CEST)

Event Description: We are faced with an emerging set of public health challenges because of war and conflict, as a result of political instability and climate catastrophe. Injury and death, and the physical and psychological impact of violence on individual and population health cannot be underestimated, especially for the most marginalized in society, and across generations. The impact on infrastructure can devastate health systems and economies. Consequently, the contribution of public health to promote peace and equity has never been more important. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the need for a new set of core public health competencies to meet these emerging challenges.
ASPHER’s curriculum review has been guided by the need to train tomorrow’s workforce in high-level communication, the role of the built environment, 21st-century field epidemiology, criminal justice, disaster preparedness, and health system resilience and sustainability. The specific challenges of war and conflict for public health will be addressed in this discussion.

There will be an expert panel and Q&A session with the online audience. We understand the importance of building vital capacity amongst public health professionals together with affected communities.

The panel will include public health curriculum design experts. They will describe ASPHER’s curriculum approach so far, touching on the new public health realities such as Climate Health, the One Health agenda, and the ethics of public health. We will engage the audience in a discussion of how these relate to our development of a War, Conflict, and Public Health curriculum. What should public health professionals do to enhance their skills in preventing violence? responding to violent conflict? and in recovery and rehabilitation from conflict situations? We will set out an agenda for a series of subsequent meetings to discuss the areas of work needed in more detail.

Theme: Fostering the Development of the Right Competencies within Tomorrow’s Health Workforce

Date and Time: 12th April 2024 | 08:00-11:00 (GMT-5)

Event Description: Mental health is an integral component of general health that significantly impacts people’s quality of life and well-being. Both the rates of mental disorders and the years lost to disability (YLDs) they generate have been increasing exponentially in recent years. Historically, anxious and depressive symptomatology is the most prevalent in the world. The World Health Organization’s report on mental health in 2023 ratifies this behavior and identifies that the Americas region has the highest prevalence of anxiety problems and the second highest rate of depressive disorders of all World Health Organization regions. Additionally, between 2000 and 2019, it was the only region that increased its age-adjusted suicide rate by 17% (PAHO, 2023). Overall, mental disorders are the leading cause of APD, accounting for one in six cases worldwide. In Colombia, about 70% of cases are not diagnosed or treated promptly (MinSalud, 2015).

Objective of the event: To provide a space for reflection and dialogue between representatives of the global society, the governmental, academic, and community sectors on the needs and challenges of mental health training in Colombia and Latin America, to influence the formulation of public policies.

Panel: Guiding question: What are the needs for mental health training in the face of the challenges of our societies in Colombia and Latin America?

Ministry of Health and Social Protection: Bibian Yiseth Moreno. Integrated Management Group for Mental Health.

Theme: Rethinking Public Health Paradigms

Date and Time: 8 April 2024 | all-day GMT+10

Event Description: Pursuing Public Health in the Preindustrial World, 1100-1800, explores public health strategies of mobile, non-urban communities in Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean, and South Asia. It draws from the understanding of Galenic health paradigms and their transmission across regions; and that preindustrial communities recognized, and reacted, to health threats in innovative and population-oriented ways. Our social media campaign highlights the work and profiles of our team members, their papers, and their talks, which span the public health practices of miners, pilgrims, and courts.
