Date and Time: 05 April 2022 | 12:00 – 12:45 (CEST)

Event Description: Extreme climate and weather events have been the focus of many anticipatory action initiatives to date but there are increasing opportunities to anticipate and act ahead of other hazards such as epidemics and disease outbreaks, which are also drivers of human suffering and loss. This talk, given by Tilly Alcayna, will explore some recent assessments of climate change impacts on health (including infectious disease transmission, NCDs, and health systems) conducted across several Asia-Pacific countries and also explore some of the potential hydro-meteorological triggers which may be contributing to driving outbreaks of climate sensitive infectious diseases.

Theme: Reversing Climate Disaster

Date and Time: 05 April 2022 | 09:00 (CEST)

Event Description: As climate change threatens to undermine water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) progress globally through extreme weather events, rising water insecurity, and disruptions to hydrological systems, the need to mainstream climate adaptation into the WASH sector is becoming ever-more apparent. Still, progress on building climate resiliency in the WASH sector has been limited, and important knowledge gaps remain on the successes and challenges associated with climate-WASH integration in key climate vulnerable settings, including the responses of local communities to climate-driven WASH hazards. This presentation details the findings of a recent study conducted on climate-resilient WASH sector development in the climate-vulnerable Lake Victoria Basin (LVB), which has seen extremes of both flooding and drought in recent years resulting in diverse WASH threats. Drawing upon interviews with WASH sector stakeholders across lakeside regions of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, and with community members in Mabinju village (Western Kenya), the adaptation strategies and experiences of LVB community members are discussed, and the institutional barriers to climate-WASH integration in the region are explored. Practical recommendations for addressing identified barriers and advancing progress on climate-resilient WASH sector development both regionally and globally are presented.

Theme: Building COVID-19 Resilience

Date and Time: 04 April 2022 | 12:00 – 13:15 (CEST)

Event Description: The unprecedented international effort to combat COVID-19 brings to spotlight health care’s dual responsibility of healthcare to both reduce its own ecological footprint and adapt to climate change’s health impacts. It provides an opportunity for the healthcare systems to put into operation climate-smart health care solutions that concurrently enhance health system resilience to both climate change and future disasters and pandemics.

As nations are moving towards COVID-19 recovery, investments need to advance greater equity for health access, along with prioritizing health care resilience. There is an urgent need for national policies to focus on the interdependence of planetary health and human health, invest in preventive care and build low carbon, climate resilient health systems.

Event Description: This webinar will provide an insight to participants on the role of physiotherapists throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. A special focus will be provided on the resilience of physiotherapists and their patients mostly in moments of global pandemic crisis. At the end of this session, participants will understand the role of physiotherapists on COVID-19 pandemic – from ICU to long-COVID stages – with special focus on the resilient measures that were adopted, both by physiotherapists and the patients, and the influence of this pandemic on mental health. Participants will learn further on physiotherapy care for persons infected with COVID-19. Throughout this webinar, which will be 1.5 hours long, speakers will present an overview on physiotherapy guidelines for COVID-19 acute care and post-acute, recovery, rehabilitation and long COVID-19 stages. This will be followed by a panel discussion on Physiotherapy at Post-Acute, Recovery, Rehabilitation and Long COVID-19 stages whereby speakers on the panels will be represented by professional and patients/clients.
