Theme: Achieving Health Equity

Date and Time: 06 April 2022 | 09:00 – 10:00 (CEST)

Event Description: Digital transformations can improve health for all people around the world. However, this is only possible if digital technologies are governed in the public interest rather than for private profit. If the design and use of digital technologies are not grounded in the health for all values – of democracy, equity, solidarity, inclusion, and human rights, we risk widening existing digital divides and gaps in health equity.

The Lancet & Financial Times Commission on Governing Health Futures 2030: Growing up in a digital world explores the convergence of digital health, artificial intelligence (AI), and other frontier technologies with UHC to support attainment of the third Sustainable Development Goal (SDG): Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages.

The Commission’s report calls for a radical rethink on digital health as well as for action in several areas to promote sustainable health futures. Its novel recommendations for a value-based framework for governing health futures will help to ensure that digital technologies are harnessed to optimise health outcomes and positively transform UHC.

Participants in this session will hear how the Commission’s report findings contribute to the global conversation on the health equity dimensions concerning the governance of health futures.

Event Description: Being 13C hotter than the global average, Australia can be viewed as a (rich) Canary in the Coal Mine. With the world’s most variable rainfall, Australia historically lurches from droughts to floods. Intensifying heat extremes and rainfall variability renders Australia extremely vulnerable to climate change. Yet despite temperatures over 50C, the Great Barrier Reef repeatedly bleaching, catastrophic wildfires lasting 7 months and burning through four states, the Government remains addicted to coal and gas March 2022 delivered the worst floods in recorded history, destroying 25,000 homes. Unprecedented is no excuse for being unprepared. Refusal to mitigate climate change is devastating families, communities, businesses, agricultural land and biodiversity. Public health advocacy is now on steroids and becoming politically active, pushing Australia to embrace PPPRR: ‘Prevent. Plan. Prepare. Respond. Recover.’
