GPHW2023: Health Policies and Public Health During the Pandemic Crisis in Latin America: The Use of Politics to Reject the Global Consensus Against COVID-19
News
Mar 17, 2023
Theme: Tackling the Climate Crisis
Date and Time: 04 April 2023 | 15:30 (CEST)
Event Description: In Latin America, politics has historically been claimed as a fundamental dimension for the identification of the context, design, and implementation of public health policies. Politics should illuminate the technical debate by contributing to the understanding of the interests and agendas that mobilize actors to facilitate or obstruct public health policy. However, a contemporary trend gained momentum during the COVID-19 pandemic: some relevant political leaders in the region used political instruments and mechanisms to forge false narratives against scientific evidence, promoting hesitation regarding preventive methods, and the dissemination of misguided alternatives for disease prevention and treatment. The combination of vocal leaders and new ways of disseminating these alternative narratives has caused serious damage to efforts to combat the disease in the region. The panel will cover the experiences of Brazil, Mexico, Panama, and the Dominican Republic, exploring similarities and differences in political narratives and strategies towards pandemics. Panelists will be encouraged to analyze the contemporary roles of politics in relation to health policy and public health.
