GPHW2023: More than Just Numbers: Indigenous Community Engaged Research and Maternity Experiences/Narratives of First Nations, Métis and Inuit Birth/Surrogate Parents, Birth Partners, Elders/Knowledge Keepers, and Health Care Providers

Event Description: The historical, social, and political exclusion of Indigenous women from public health research does not address maternal health disparities for First Nation, Métis, and Inuit women across Canada. These disparities include 1.7 to over four times higher rates of infant mortality and preterm birth; sudden infant death syndrome; nutritional limitations; and inadequate prenatal care and high levels of stress. Despite these disparities, the 2009 Public Health Agency of Canada Maternal Experiences Survey did not capture Indigenous women’s maternity experiences. To understand the unique barriers and challenges faced by Indigenous women and families seeking perinatal care, ten semi-structured sharing circles, with a combined total of 56 participants across Canada were conducted. This presentation includes the diverse perspectives of Indigenous parents, health care providers, community supports, and Elders to provide community informed health recommendations. Data were analyzed thematically, and four overarching themes were identified to address: 1) celebrating strengths and visions; 2) intergenerational impacts on maternal child health and wellness; 3) healthcare and interactions with colonial systems; and 4) services, supports and access to culturally safe care. This research advances Indigenous knowledge(s), experiences, and methodologies in population and public health research in Canada by addressing longstanding scientific issues of inclusion, representation and the advancement of Indigenous women’s maternal health and wellness.
