WFPHA Invitational Roundtable on the Global Public Health Workforce

Tuesday, November 6, 2007, 7:30-9:30 am
Renaissance Hotel-Ballroom West A

Convener:
Dr. SM Asib Nasim, President, World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA)

Background : While the global public health workforce is central to long-term health improvements, little is known about its composition, training or performance. Who are the frontline public health workers, how are they trained, and what do they do? How do public health careers develop over time, and how do issues of internal and external brain drain affect the public health workforce? WFPHA and RF seek to expand public health workforce analyses to the global setting, investigating how current public health practitioners in the public and NGO sectors spend their time, what skills they need, and whether their training adequately prepared them for these activities.

General Objective : To exchange information about how best to build the evidence base about the global workforce. Expert analyses in addition to lessons learned from the workforce experience in the US and the Americas will help inform future research and activities.
