Chair of WFPHA's Tobacco Control Working Group
Awarded the Prestigious Luther Terrry Award
Michael Daube, chair of the WFPHA's Tobacco
Control Working Group and past-President of the Public Health Association of
Australia and currently President of the Australian Council and Smoking and
Health (ACOSH), has been awarded the 2012 Luther Terry Award for his
distinguished career and contribution in tobacco control. The Luther L. Terry
Awards, named in honour of the late United States Surgeon General Luther L.
Terry, M.D., who advocacy established the foundation for public health action
on tobacco and smoking, are presented triennially by the American Cancer
Society in conjunction with the World Conference on Tobacco OR Health. These
awards recognize outstanding worldwide achievement in the field of tobacco
control. Congratulations to Mike!!

The federation was delighted to have two of its representatives (James Chauvin, President-elect and Laetitia Bourquin, Executive Manager) attend the conference. One of the opening plenary panelists described the event as
“Alma-Ata” for the 21st Century.

Report from the European Public Health Conference
The 4th
joint European Public Health Conference combining the 19th annual EUPHA meeting
and the 33rd annual meeting of ASPHER, co-organised with the Danish Society of
Public Health (DSOPH), took place in Copenhagen from 10 to 12 November 2011.
With 1308
participants for the main conference, 166 oral presentations, 38 workshops and
431 posters presented from 55 countries it was and interesting and successful
conference.

Dialogue on
multi-stakeholder diplomacy: Partnerships to reach the health-related
Millennium Development Goals
The Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development (NFSD), together with the Global Health Programme of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, and the Global Partnerships Forum,
convened an experts’ meeting on the topic of partnerships to reach the
health-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on 26 October 2011 in
Geneva. The meeting was part of the ongoing Geneva Dialogue series
hosted by the foundation on global health issues. The event was
moderated by Ilona Kickbusch, Director of the Global Health Programme.

5th High-Level Symposium on Global Health
Diplomacy
"Ten years after
the doha declaration: The future agenda at the Interface of Public Health,
Innovation and Trade - An Outlook on the next ten years"
The annual high-level symposium of the Global Health Programme explores
critical issues and new developments in global health with particular
relevance to the intersection of health, foreign policy and trade. This
year’s symposium focused on the future agenda at the interface of public
health, innovation and trade under the auspices of Madame Ruth Dreifuss,
former chairperson of the WHO Commission on Intellectual Property
Rights, Innovation and Public Health (CIPIH). The Graduate Institute
provided a neutral, academic platform that brings together various
stakeholders.

WFPHA
participation at the 139th APHA Conference
The
Federation was delighted once again to participate actively in this
year’s 139th APHA Conference (October 28 – Nov 2, 2011: Washington, DC).
Besides featuring the 13th World Congress of Public Health at the
WFPHA booth in the huge and well-attended exhibit section, WFPHA also hosted,
co-chaired and participated as presenters and discussants at several concurrent
sessions.

At Tuesday evening’s Public Health Awards
Reception & Ceremony, the Federation presented to APHA President Dr. Linda
Rae Murray and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Georges Benjamin a statuette. This
award was made in recognition of the sustained and considerable support
provided by APHA since the Federation’s founding in 1967.
The
role of public health associations to move forward action
towards health equity through a “social determinants of
health” lens
In
late September 2011, in preparation for the WHO Conference on
the Social Determinants of Health, the WFPHA surveyed its Full
Member national public health associations to gain an
understanding of how they view the concepts of health equity
and the social determinants of health. The survey also
examined the opportunities and challenges they perceive for
national public health associations and the WFPHA to
contribute to the achievement of health equity for all through
a social determinants of health approach, both nationally and
globally. James Chauvin, WFPHA Vice President and
President-Elect, made a presentation about the survey’s
results during the American Public Health Association’s 139th
Conference in Washington, DC. An article about the survey’s
results will be published soon.
1st International Symposium on Health Research & Developement
The
3rd West Pacific Regional Conference on Public Health
in Denpasar,
Bali/Indonesia 16-18 November 2011
After conferences in Beijing (2009) and Tokyo
(2010) the 3rd Regional Conference on Public Health in the Pacific
region was organised by the WFPHA Liaison office in Beijing together with the
Indonesian Public Health Association, the World Health Organisation and the
National Institute of Health and Research Development of Indonesia. The general
theme was “Health Research and
Development to Address Health Inequality”.

Outcomes of the First Global Climate and
Health Summit in Durban
Coming out of the first global Climate and
Health Summit on December 4, which took place parallel to the UNFCCC meetings
in Durban, South Africa, thirty leading health NGOs and organizations from
around the world released a Declaration and a Global Call to Action.
The event brought key health sector actors
from around the world together to discuss the impacts of climate change on
public health and solutions that promote better and more equitable health
outcomes. More than 250 people from more
than 40 countries attended the event: doctors, nurses, public health experts,
health and medical scientists, medical students, and health officials from
major international health organizations are meeting in Durban to try and
influence negotiations by raising awareness about the health risks of climate
change and the health benefits of climate action.

University Public Health Association's (NUPHA) first annual general meeting
The
Njala University Public Health Association (NUPHA), on Saturday November 12th, collaborated
with one of Sierra Leone’s leading pharmaceutical companies Emzor
Pharmaceuticals to commemorate the association’s annual general meeting with
the theme: political violence is a major threat to the advancement of public
health.

NUPHA, World Vision and SOS Collaborate on HIV/AIDS Iinteractive Active Dialogue
The Njala University
Public Health Association (NUPHA) last Thursday collaborated with the
international charity World Vision, Bo in an interactive dialogue to
commemorate this year’s World AIDS Day on December 1st. The
interactive dialogue which took place at the grounds of the SOS Village
in Torwama, in the Tinkonko chiefdom drew hundreds of youths and young
adults of the SOS village school, community elders students of the Njala
University School in what could be described in a frank and open
dialogue on issues bordering on HIV/AIDS.

PHASA bids to host the 16th World
Conference on Tobacco or Health
The Public Health Association of South Africa
(PHASA), in association with the City of Johannesburg, submitted a bid to host
the 16th World Conference on Tobacco or Health in 2015. This
international event, held every three years, provides a forum to exchange best
practice and new effective approaches for tobacco control as a means to create
a smoke-free world. The 15th Conference will take place in March
2012 in Singapore. WFPHA provided a letter of support for the PHASA/City of
Johannesburg bid. We wish them success and will communicate the outcome of the
selection process in a future newsletter.
CPHA's
case before the Supreme Court of Canada
You
may remember during our Exec Board meeting last May that I mentioned about CPHA
appearing before the Supreme Court of Canada, as an intervenor on the side of
Insite, the safe injection drug facility in Vancouver that the federal
government was seeking to close down. The federal government was arguing that
the existence of such a facility contravened the federal Controlled Drugs and
Substances Act (CDSA). About 6 years ago, Insite had been allowed to exist
initially as a 3-year pilot project, having received an exemption to the CDSA
through the federal Minister of Justice and the federal Minister of Health.

Health Systems Evidence is a valuable resource for policymakers,
stakeholders and researchers seeking to address today’s most pressing
health challenges. It provides answers on questions about how to
strengthen or reform health systems, or how to get cost-effective
programs, services and drugs to those who need them.
The redeveloped website offers numerous enhancements, including new open
search and advanced search functionalities, and is available in seven
languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Portuguese, Russian and
Spanish.

from the Non-Communicable Disease Prevention Program
International
Development Research Centre (IDRC) – Canada
A
couple of months ago, the Non-Communicable Disease Prevention Program (NCDPP) at
Canada’s International Development
Research Centre (IDRC) launched a non-communicable disease (NCD) research
prioritization activity using a method called Concept Mapping. The response was
considerable: 200 individuals, mostly from low- and middle-income countries,
contributed a total of 440 priorities! After a careful and thorough review,
which included eliminating redundant statements as well as those that were
considered too broad, too narrow or outside the specified scope of the four
major NCDs and the main risk factors. In the end, 87 priorities were
identified.
The
NCCDP/IDRC is extending an invitation to all national public health
associations
to participate in a brief online exercise that involves rating the proposed
NCD primary prevention research priorities. This exercise will help the
NCDPP to explore if priorities differ by region or types of respondents
(researchers vs decision-makers). The rating phase should only require around
15-20 minutes of your time. The software allows you to save your work and return
to complete it later if needed.

encourages its PHA members to participate in this important global survey. The
results, to be shared by IDRC, will be published in a future WFPHA
newsletter.
The GRF One Health Summit 2012
19-23 February 2012 in Davos, Switzerland
The GRF One Health Summit 2012 will contribute to
advancing the concept of “One Health” – which strives for intensive
collaboration among all stakeholders related to public health – with elements
of integrative risk management throughout the whole risk cycle. As today’s
health risk management requires to be dealt with from a holistic perspective
that acknowledges the systemic interconnections of
human, animal and environmental health in close relation with food safety and
security, only such an integrative approach will ensure sustainable public
health in an era of climate change, resource depletion, land degradation, food
insecurity and development challenges. read

ICN 25th Quadrennial Congress

25th Quadrennial Congress will be held in one of the world‘s `most
liveable` cities,- Melbourne, Australia, 18-23 May 2013

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) is pleased to release the Call for
Abstracts and launch the website for its 25th Quadrennial Congress and CNR.
Headlined with the theme Equity and Access to Health Care, Congress will
take place in Melbourne, Australia from 18-23 May 2013. Instructions
for submitting abstracts for the scientific programme and details on the themes
to be addressed can be accessed on their website.
The deadline for abstract submission is 14 September 2012.

WHO and our new DTO
After three years of fruitfull colaboration with Rebecca Bailey, the new Designed Technical Officer (DTO) of the WFPHA has been officially appointed.
We welcome Dr. Ruediger Krech, Director of the Department of Ethics, Equity, Trade and Human Rights, as our person of contact at
WHO and together we will establish the new WFPHA/WHO Collaboration Plan
for 2012/2014.
Public Health Education WG survey call
Dear Members
The WFPHA Public Health Education working group (Chaired by Dr. Ehud Miron) would like to investigate the use of National
Public Health Essential Functions Frameworks throughout the world through a very short questionnaire.
We would like to ask you to send to Marta Lomazzi the e-mail address of one of your members that could at best represent your association in this field , if possible by January 15th 2012.
The questionnaire will be sent directly to the designed person in January. The questionnaire will not take more than 15 minutes.
