The HINARI Project, sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) makes full text articles available either free or at low cost to many countries.

JSTOR - On November 18, JSTOR launched the Developing Nations Access Initiative, extending their efforts well beyond Africa. Under this initiative, not-for-profit institutions in 41 additional countries may gain access to the archive free of charge or at a very low costs. Funding Opportunity for Research on the Social Determinants of Health
A funding opportunity for research on the Social Determinants of Health from the Bupa Foundation in the UK has recently been announced.

£750 000 (total) is available for 1, 2 or 3 year projects for researchers based in UK, Australia, Denmark, Hong Kong, India, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Spain and Thailand. This would be an especially good fund to apply for if you work with a group of collaborators who reside in the countries mentioned above. They only seek to fund 1 or 2 strong projects.

Dr. Nils Daulaire Resonates a Message of Change
After more than ten years leading the Global Health Council (GHC), Nils Daulaire, MD, MPH, will complete his tenure as President and CEO in February 2009. The GHC’s Board of Directors have begun an international search process to select Dr. Daulaire’s successor. GHC will have a link on their website for members to submit names and suggestions as to GHC’s future and leadership.

President Buss joins the Foundation Council of Global Forum for Health Research

Professor Paulo Buss, WFPHA's President, assumed the position of Member of the Foundation Council of the Global Forum for Health Research on November 20, 2008, in Bamako, Republic of Mali.

The Foundation Council is the highest policy- and decision-making body of the Global Forum. It gives the broad orientations of the organization and is responsible for the definition of its objectives and priority areas as well as its long-term vision.

The Global Forum is an independent, international organization committed to demonstrating the essential role of research and innovation for health and health equity, benefiting poor and marginalized populations as health equity is a priority.

The 2008 Ministerial Global Forum on Health was co-organized by the Global Forum for Health Research and held November 17-19, 2008 in Bamako, Mali. Over 600 stakeholders including delegates from Ministers of Health, research institutes; social development organizations; civil society organizations; national research funding councils; donor agencies; philanthropic foundations; and representatives of the private sector attended the forum. The next Global Forum will be held in Havana, Cuba, in November 2009.

WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control
From October 20-25 2008, representatives from over 150 countries having ratified the FCTC met in Geneva to develop a Protocol on Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products. Scores of representatives from the Framework Convention Alliance (FCA) and its member NGOs participated and contributed significantly to the quality of the discussions. The World Federation of Public Health Associations was represented by Theodor Abelin, MD, MPH, Chair, Program on Tobacco Control and former WFPHA President. WFPHA West-Pacific Regional Office
At the 41st WFPHA General Assembly, China was asked to take the lead in coordinating the regional countries to build a better network and develop exchange and cooperation with other PHAs in the WPRO region. The liaison office of WPRO will be set up by CPMA in Beijing, China in November 2009. At the same time, CPMA will host the first West-Pacific Regional Conference on Public Health (WPRCPH). Congratulations to the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association and the Japan Public Health Association for working together on the development of this project.
